Waveform data obtained by the Electric Field Detector (EFD) of the Plasma Wave Experiment (PWE) instrument onboard the Arase spacecraft are examined in detail to assess the quality of the DC to low-frequency electric field and the spacecraft potential. EFD records electric potentials of four metal probes installed at tips of two orthogonal pairs of the wire antennas extending from the satellite body and observes an electric field by measuring an electric potential difference between each pair of two probes. In principle, we expect that the instrument obtains sinusoidal waveforms of the potential difference with a period of the satellite’s spin, as the antennas rotate as well in a natural electric field perpendicular to the spin axis. Our detailed analysis, however, has revealed that sometimes the waveforms significantly deviate from a well-defined sinusoidal curve, and the two pairs of antenna yield somewhat inconsistent electric field vectors, particularly in a low plasma density environment such as outside the plasmasphere. We have analyzed and discussed possible causes of the unexpected characteristics of the waveforms in the regular, EFD sub-team meeting, which has been called as “the EFD bootcamp”. In this paper, we showcase and review the current issues of the electric field data provided by EFD including data processing pipelines. Detailed behavior of electric potentials of the four probes as well as the spacecraft potential dependent on the spin phase of the spacecraft is also discussed.

The moon is exposed to the solar wind or magnetospheric plasmas due to the lack of global magnetic field or the dense atmosphere like those of the Earth. Most of the incident plasmas are absorbed by the lunar surface, but a small fraction of protons are scattered back into the solar wind in the form of ions, or neutral atoms to be re-ionized through charge exchange. The solar wind particles that came across intense local crustal magnetic field so called as the magnetic anomalies are more strongly reflected back due to the Lorentz force. Electrons that came into the region near intense magnetic anomalies are mirror reflected and/or accelerated by local electric field generated by difference of penetration depth of ions and electrons.

These plasmas have energy that can generate various wave activities (Harada and Halekas, 2016). Protons reflected by the magnetic anomalies are responsible for generation of monochromatic ULF waves or ELF waves through cyclotron resonance with MHD waves or whistler mode waves. Mirror-reflected electron beams along the magnetic field connected to the magnetic anomaly are thought to be the source of non-monochromatic whistler mode waves in the frequency range from 0.1 to 10 Hz. Detection of the non-monochromatic whistler waves depends on magnetic connection between the spacecraft and the magnetic anomalies.

Another type of ELF whistler waves were found by Kaguya. The frequency range was broad (1-16 Hz) like the non-monochromatic whistlers generated by field-aligned electrons, while their detection was less sensitive to the magnetic connection as well as the waves generated by reflected protons. They were preferentially observed above the polar region of the moon. The detection site was off the magnetic anomaly. They were found when the incident solar wind density was high.

The generation mechanism of such diffuse whistler mode waves is not yet understood. Dense solar wind flux incident to lunar surface unshielded by the crustal magnetic field is likely to cause scattering of solar wind protons in the form of ions or neutral atoms to be re-ionized. Scattered protons with less collimated velocities might account for the broad frequency range and the occurrence property less sensitive to the magnetic connection to the lunar surface.

The solar wind particles that hit the moon are mostly absorbed by the lunar surface, leaving a plasma void region called the lunar wake downstream. Differently from the solar side of the moon where reflected solar wind particles give rise to various wave activities, the lunar wake is essentially quiet in magnetic fluctuations.

An exception is the ELF waves associated with the type-II entry ions, a kind of reflected ions that can access the central wake due to their large gyro radius. In order to study the generation mechanism of the waves, the directions of k vectors and the magnetic oscillation were examined using magnetic field and plasma observations by MAP/LMAG magnetometer onboard Kaguya. It is difficult to find the exact direction of k vector because the variation of the magnetic field is not always twodimensional but often one-dimensional. They were rather on the perpendicular side to the background magnetic field. The direction of the oscillation shows preference to be parallel to the background magnetic field.

Extremely Low Frequency Whistler Mode Wave above the Polar Region of the Moon Detected by Kaguya

The solar wind particles that hit the moon are mostly absorbed by the lunar surface, but a small fraction of them are scattered by the lunar surface or mirror reflected by the local crustal magnetic field, giving rise to various wave activities around the moon [1,2]. Most prominent are monochromatic ULF waves and whistler mode waves generated by reflected protons, and non-monochromatic whistler waves associated with reflected solar wind particles. They enhance on the dayside of the moon and above the terminator region.

Kaguya found another type of magnetic fluctuations at a 100 km altitude above the polar regions of the moon in the solar wind or in the magnetosheath. They were faint, non-monochromatic waves with no clear peak in the frequency range between 1 and 12 Hz, with diffuse appearance in the dynamic spectra. They were found in the 32s-Fourier transformed spectra of the 32Hz sampling magnetic field data obtained by MAP/LMAG onboard Kaguya. Eight events were found during the period from January 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009. Half of them showed gradual decrease of frequency within 10-20 minute period according as the spacecraft approached the North Pole. Direction of the k vectors was calculated from the minimum variance analysis for each Fourier component. They were approximately parallel to the background magnetic field. The sense of rotation was right-handed with only 1 exception. The solar wind density was high during the period of the observation of the waves.

Among them, an event showed a clear falling tone from 9 Hz to 1 Hz within 20 minutes of duration. It was a right-hand polarized wave propagating parallel to the background magnetic field in the z direction of the Selenocentric Solar Ecliptic coordinates. It was detected when the moon was in the Earth’s magnetosheath and the spacecraft was moving along a path from the evening side toward the north pole of the moon. No Doppler shift was expected since the propagating direction was perpendicular to the plasma bulk flow in the sheath. The falling tone cannot be explained by the frequency dependence of the wave velocity because the frequency variation was too slow, and the distance between the spacecraft and the lunar surface (the probable source of the wave) was too small. Kaguya detected no ions or electrons that were likely to generate waves. On the lunar surface, no intense crustal magnetic field was found at the foot of the magnetic field. It is expected that some sputtering process in a limited source generates plasma component in the close vicinity of the lunar surface, and give rise to the whistler mode wave at different frequency dependent on the distance from the source.

At the lunar wake boundary, the solar wind ions are accelerated toward the center of the wake due to the pressure gradient, and produce vortex motion whose direction is consistent with the polarization of the magnetic fluctuations. The kinetic energy of the solar wind is converted into the electromagnetic energy and then field-aligned electric current.

Kelvin-Helmholtz-like vortex at the lunar wake boundary in the solar wind

AP-RASC 2019, India Habitat Centre, New Delh,India, 09-15 March, 2019 (withdrawn).

Kelvin-Helmholtz vortex-like waves were found by MAP/LMAG onboard Kaguya in the lunar wake. They were preferentially found in the lunar wake boundary when the solar wind magnetic field was perpendicular to the bulk flow. The sense of rotation was consistent with the Kelvin-Helmholtz vortex. The thickness of the density gradient layer at the wake boundary was about 300-430 km, which was only several times of ion Larmor radius. The waveform was steepened at the wake boundary, and became sinusoidal in the central wake. No dawn-dusk asymmetry as observed at Mercury was found.

In association with vortex, field aligned electron flow was detected by Kaguya MAP-PACE instrument. The speed of the electron flow was 4000 km/s and the direction was consistent with the equivalent electric charge generated by the magnetic field convected by the vortex motion at the wake boundary.
